Le Center Area Color and Honor Guard

Military Funeral Honors is a way to show the nation's deep gratitude to those who, in times of war and peace, have faithfully defended our country. This ceremonial paying of respect is the final demonstration a grateful nation can provide to the veteran's family. An honor guard detail for the burial of an eligible veteran is required by law, if requested by a survivor. Here in the Le Center area, this essential service is provided by the Le Center area Color/Honor Guard. The squad is made up of veteran volunteers from the American Legion Post 108 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1803. We are very proud of our Color and Honor Guard. Participation in our community is very high and our veterans do an outstanding job representing the military in local parades and honoring our fallen comrades.

Color Guard

We usually have 15 to 20 veterans from all branches of the service participate in local parades and celebrations. Auxiliary members from the Legion & VFW Auxiliary organizations also participate in Color Guard activities. Here are just a few examples of events involving the Le Center Color Guard:

St. Patrickís Day Le Center
Memorial Day Le Center
Cherry Creek Days Cleveland
Independence Day Parade Elysian
Le Sueur Giant Days Le Sueur
North Morristown Parade North Morristown
Independence Day Parade Elysian
Holidaze Parade Le Center

Honor Guard

Le Center Area Honor Guard participates in 15 to 20 burial services each year for our fallen comrades. Sometimes, as many as 40 or 50 Honor Guard members turn out to pay final respect to our deceased comrades. They also participate in flag raising ceremonies throughout the area, Relay for Life events and Eagle Scout awards. They also provide the solemn duty of properly disposing of our Nationís flag when the flag falls into disrepair, and can no longer be displayed. We call this "Retiring the Colors."

The Honor Guard also maintains a Firing Squad for rendering proper rifle salutes for funerals and memorial celebrations.

Participation is voluntary and we would encourage veterans and auxiliary members to help the Color Guard or Honor Guard as your schedule allows. We have an annual Color Guard Party at the Post Home to say thank you for those that participate and volunteer their time.
